CHAPTER 13

Anita was impressed.

Frank would have been pretty awe-inspiring under most circumstances, but here he was, being funny and coming up with good ideas while she was making him stand on one foot doing crazy things with his arms. And he was playing for a date? That was pretty flattering.

The pile of fabric in their fort was looking pretty tempting, actually, and Anita had a hot moment wondering how far she could get Frank to go with Simon Says. Would he take off his sweatshirt and shirt so she could see if his chest was as gorgeous as she imagined it was? Would he kiss her if she told him to? Or lay her down and make sweet love to her?

It would probably be hard to do on one leg.

Frank was gorgeous—and a shifter!—and he was so nice that Anita wanted to trust him and let herself feel all those bedroom feelings.

But she didn’t dare.

She was running out of things to challenge him with and it occurred to her that it was probably as bright in the building as it was going to get.

“Do you want to go exploring?” she asked, trying not to stare at Frank too obviously. “It’s light right now. Maybe we should look for our ghost before it gets dark and raid the kitchen before everything goes bad.”

“An excellent plan,” Frank agreed cheerfully.

Anita half-expected him to stride out, forgetting about her stand on one leg command and she held her breath in anticipation.

But he was still patting his head and rubbing his stomach as he turned and hopped towards the back hallway.

“You can stop rubbing your stomach,” Anita told him as she caught up with him, wondering how on earth he was managing to keep his limbs all synched up.

He gave her a cheeky smile and continued with his jerky hop-rub-pat.

“Simon says you can stop rubbing your stomach,” Anita corrected.

He did, with a sigh of relief, and they continued on.

They made it out to the front entrance, and Anita gaped around. It was not well lit, but there were enough windows letting in light to see the marble floor and the fancy art. There were sculptures in alcoves all around the big lobby area, and everything was velvet and gold, like pictures she’d seen of old opera houses.

“If we’re explorers, we should be thorough,” Frank said, marching one-legged to the first door on the right. It was locked. “Probably a closet?” he guessed.

“You’re the janitor,” Anita pointed out. “You should know!”

The next door opened onto a coat check room, and there was one lone coat hanging there, a ticket on its sleeve suggesting someone had mistakenly left there it long ago. Frank offered it to Anita, but she demurred in favor of her Irish princess cloak. There was a broom in the corner, and Frank hefted it thoughtfully, then brought it with them.

If he’d been heroic with a bottle of water, that was nothing compared to Frank wielding a broom like a sword. On one leg.
